To address a few concerns...
Are our schools "under performing"?
No, In fact a Stanford study showed our learning growth rates to be the highest in the county. Likewise, these rankings show our test scores are #2 in the county just behind Jericho.
Have we compared ourselves to a "high performing low cost" district?
Manhasset is often cited on this one, and yes, of course. Read more here. Here's another way to make this comparison.
Should we merge with other districts to save money via economies of scale?
Existing research indicates districts larger than 1500 students (North Shore has close to 2600) cannot save money by merging. There is some evidence that very small districts in certain circumstances could save by consolidating although it can mean increased spending in the short term. Read the research here rather than accept an assertion that seems like it makes sense - even Newsday says we have nothing to gain. Moreover, North Shore already currently uses several strategies to gain scale by cooperating with our districts through large joint bids and shared services through BOCES.
Do our schools cost more than they should?
The answer here may truly be personal opinion, but see our actual, relative tax rates here before you decide. They are below average in TOB. Likewise, compare the percentage of our budget that goes to student-facing program in our district versus other districts for more good news. If you want to get way into the weeds, read why dividing the budget by the number of students gives you a number that can be very misleading here.
